Evaluation - What should I be writing about?

Evaluation is a simple task but most of the times, students tend to miss out many points that they could have touched on when reflecting upon the process of their coursework, starting from Task Analysis, right until Execution.

Here are some things you may find useful when you are writing the Evaluation component of your coursework. Don't forget that you have to complete it according to the marking rubrics that I've shared with you previously.

Feel free to email me any concerns. :)

Sensory Evaluation - What words do I use?

It's normal to be confused over describing the appearance, taste, smell and texture of your dishes after cooking them, especially when you are trying to be objective about it. "Nice" is not enough to describe the taste of your dish, since one can like spicy food while another dislikes spicy food.

Words like "fragrant" may not be completely helpful when someone is trying to understand how your dish turned out simply from reading a piece of paper with words on it. They were not there to personally smell and taste your food. Therefore, you must paint the picture for them using proper words that would point them in the direction of imagining the outcome of your dish in terms of appearance, smell, taste and texture.

Don't blame your teacher, or classmates, nor the ingredients supplied! >_<Hope that this helps when you are doing the Evaluation component of your coursework!

Unit 12: Food Commodities (NSP)

Just what are NSP? Simply put, it is a abbreviation for something that is linked to dietary fibre.

What does this abbreviation stand for?

Non-Starch Polysaccharides? Doesn't that sound familiar? Let's turn back to Unit 2, Page 12. "Glycogen, pectin and cellulose are collectively referred to as non-starch polysaccharides."

I could go on forever, but ultimately at your level, there are simply a few things you should know about NSPs.

What are the roles of dietary fibre in our diets? Is it simply something found in plants that refuse to be digested by our human enzymes and pass out as waste? If that is so, why are there so many dietary fibre drinks? If I don't want to get my dietary fibre from chemical drinks, what are some foods that I can consume to gain such nutrients? What happens when these foods are subjected to the heat of cooking? How does all these ingredients react with the structure of the food?

I found this really awesome website, Go Grains & Nutrition, which explains dietary fibre on a more comprehensive basis, if you find yourself bored with what Food Interactions is showing you. Read up more and understand it, and explain to me what you've learnt, or any interesting websites you've come across that allowed you to learn even more by commenting in this post!

Lots of Love, Miss Zeng

Child-driven education: Amazing what -YOU- can do with the computer.

"Go find it out yourself."

Sugata Mitra's talk was certainly one of the most interesting ones I've seen thus far. I have always been thinking that once you are able to pique curiousity, learning will take place. However, my dilemma was always, "How do I pique that curiousity in students who always feel unamazed by the world around them?"

Sugata Mitra conducted a series of experiments where he used computers, on a ratio of 1:4 to learners, gave them a 'quest', and left them to explore on their own. The results were startling. Personally, I couldn't believe the outcomes of his experiments! How could 10 year olds, who simply spent 20 to 45 minutes reading up to answer 6 GCSE questions, remember exactly what they found out, 2 months later?

A few factors are required:

-Pedagogy: Obviously, before he planned what questions to ask the students to answer, he came up with HOW he wished for the students to learn, which translates to learning strategies.
-Experience of learning: When the students found the basic answer, and was asked to delve deeper, they took it upon themselves to read further and learnt many more related factors.
-Tone of environment: He set rules for them, and let them cooperate with each other when using the computer.
-Assessment: To judge for 'deep learning', he gave them a written test. This is also to allow the students to understand what level of knowledge they have.
-Learning content: Obviously, one should make sure that what they learn is relevant and useful, not corrupted and immoral information.
-Student-centered learning: Students initiate the learning, and they peer-teach when others in the same group do not understand

Certainly, based on this talk, I can almost conclude that teaching in a rural village would be more rewarding for a teacher despite the challenges of scarce resources.

Food Order Status

Dear children,

I have compiled your courseworks (with recipes) into the food order and sent in the order today. What you will find below are the names of people whose ingredients are listed in a table. Look out for those that are 'BYO', meaning you have to Bring Your Own. Please see if there are any other people like you who need 1 globe of grape etc, you can share one bunch and just pluck out 2-3 globes for your practical. Honey and mayonnaise, pool money to see who is buying a bottle, and pay for what you take from that person.

People whose coursework I have not received/has no recipe:
Hafiz, Khadijah, Ruying, Zafira, Yan Wee
The above-mentioned will need to bring your own ingredients, alright? Of course, cooking oil, pepper, oil, other seasonings are provided.

Please note that if you require fancy chopsticks, we do not have fancy patterned ones.

*Available = School has stock, or has ordered for you
*BYO=Bring Your Own
